On Collecting

What do we choose to live with—and why?

On Collecting is a series of intimate conversations between Season Fair Founder and Curatorial Director Amani Olu, a collector himself, and collectors with distinctly different approaches to acquiring and living with contemporary art. From buying your first work to building a collection over decades, the conversations explore how taste develops, what makes us commit to an artist, and how collecting becomes a form of support.

Format: Each 45-minute conversation is followed by a 15-minute audience Q&A.

SATURDAY | SEPTEMBER 12

12:30 PM — Dr. Aya M. Waller-Bey
Waller-Bey began collecting seriously four years ago, focusing largely on emerging artists. Her collection includes works by Tylonn Sawyer, Oshun Williams, Zuri Dean, Louise Jones/Ouizi, and India Solomon. Through The Collecting Class, Waller-Bey also works to demystify art collecting and encourage Black millennials in Detroit to collect “early and often.”

3:00 PM — Mario Moore
An artist and collector, Moore approaches collecting from both sides of the practice: making art and living with other artists' work. His collection includes Jordan Casteel, Jennifer Packer, Rashaun Rucker, Ricky Weaver, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, LaKela Brown, and John Edmonds. He has collected multiple works by his mentor Richard Lewis, who taught Moore to paint in oils and whom Moore considers significantly underrecognized.

12:30 PM — Marian and Stephan J. Loginsky
Longtime Detroit collectors, Marian and Stephan J. Loginsky offer a perspective unique to the series: they collect together. That means discovering artists, deciding what to acquire, and negotiating two sets of taste toward a collection they both want to live with.
