“In 18th- and early 19th-century Michigan, enslaved Black people were forced to transport furs under European rule. This painting reflects on notions of upward mobility and aspirational fashion in American history. By inserting my own body into the labor of the fur trade, I claim the right to wear the very fur I would have once been made to carry.”

- Mario Moore

Detroit native Mario Moore holds an MFA from Yale and has exhibited at major institutions including the DIA, CAAM and the Studio Museum. A 2023 Kresge Arts Fellow and 2018–19 Princeton Hodder Fellow, Moore’s work is held in prominent collections and explores history, identity and place through richly narrative painting.
